2014 Literary Festival: Author Jill Patterson

Jill Patterson teaches in the creative writing program at Texas Tech University, where she also sserves as Editor of Iron Horse Literary Review. Her prose has recently been published in Texas Monthly, Colorado Review, Barrelhouse, Grist, Baltimore Review and other journals. In 2013, she won the Everett Southwest Literary Award, judged by Lee K. Abbott. In 2009, she began volunteering with the Texas Regional Public Defenders Office for Capital Cases and other statewide public defenders. For them, she helps to write life narratives for mitigation packets and videos, to establish case themes, and to interview witnesses and defendants.
She has assisted in seven state and two federal cases and has taught storytelling workshops at the Center for American and International Law, the Las Vegas Federal Public Defenders Office, and the NAACP Capital Trial College in Airlie, Virginia, as well as for the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and the Utah Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. In 2012, she received an Embrey Human Rights Fellowship for her work fighting capital pumishment and is currently a finalist for a 2014 Soros Justice Fellowship, sponsored by the Open Society Foundations in New York.
