LU Choral Concert: Handel's Messiah

Ring in the holiday season with Lamar’s A Cappella Choir and Grand Chorus as they perform selections from George Frideric Handel's “Messiah” at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 1, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Beaumont.
The choirs will be joined by members of the Lamar Civic Orchestra and the Southeast Texas community for the concert, which will be conducted by James Han, director of choral activities at Lamar. The concert will also feature guest conductors Kurt Gilman, chair of the Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music, and Russ Schultz, dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication.
The concert opens with “Alleluia” by Ralph Manuel, led by student conductor Michelle White of Carthage. Bryan Proksch, musicologist and assistant professor in the Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music, will then briefly detail the history of Handel's oratorio masterpiece.
Audience members will be encouraged to sing along with the exuberant "Hallelujah" chorus. A holiday reception will follow the concert, featuring hot chocolate, coffee, Christmas cookies and other treats.
